THE HISTORY OF CRAZYBALL

Founded in 1975, the Canadian Youth CrazyBall Organization (CYCO) is dedicated to promoting the sport of CrazyBall (Canada’s 14th most popular participation sport!) for the purpose of grooming future professional players.

The origins of CrazyBall are shrouded in mystery. They’re rumoured to have originated from a hybrid of netball and sambo wrestling and brought to Manitoba by a Dagestani poultry farmer in the late 1800’s.

By the middle of the 20th century, CrazyBall tournaments were being held from coast to coast but until recently, almost every province has played under a completely different set of rules.

In the spring of 1986, after a succession of catastrophic injuries, civil rights violations and chronic noise complaints, CrazyBall was banned in nearly every province of Canada and CYCO was deemed a criminal organization.

The embargo lasted until 1990 when the CrazyBall Athletic Council of Canada drafted the unified set of rules, although currently, only the Manitoba and Ontario chapters have officially adopted the new regulations.

The World Cup of CrazyBall is held every seven years although to date, Canada is the only participating nation.
